PLETTENBERG BAY – AP Botes’ attempt to dethrone defending champion Mark McNulty started in the best possible way on Tuesday, as he shot a 4-under 68 to sit two strokes in the lead after the opening round of the SA Senior Open at Plettenberg Bay Country Club.
Th 2019 SA Senior Open started off in fairly calm but chilly conditions, but the wind picked up in the afternoon with 33km easterly gusts keeping everyone on their toes with only two golfers turning in under par.
The 2019 edition has seen its strongest ever field take to the Plettenberg Bay Country Club golf course. Mark McNulty, James Kingston and Roger Wessels, who all headed into the tournament as favourites, ended off the day on even par to sit on tied 4th.
Kevin Stone, who finished 2nd in 2018, and is the current Order of Merit leader for 2019, shot a 73 to be 1 over and tied in seventh spot. Meanwhile Mike Quin managed to score a 71 and is currently lying in second place.
AP Botes, who is hoping to win his first ever title on the Sunshine Senior Tour, cemented his lead on the 18th with a 49m eagle much to his delight.
“Today was a great start," Botes said. "I’ve been working on my short game before the tournament and now I just need to be consistent over the next few days. I'm excited for the rest of the week."
Hosted by Bitou Municipality, day 1 featured the Bitou Mayoral Pro-Am with Executive Mayor Peter Lobese teeing off alongside Brad Diffenthal to start proceedings. The Bitou Mayoral Pro-Am forms a special part of proceedings with funds raised being donated to the mayoral bursary fund to support youth development initiatives in the region.
The SA Senior Open is the pinnacle for senior golfers competing on the Sunshine Senior Tour with a prize fund of R500 000. The Sunshine Senior Tour is the professional tour for golfers aged 50 and over in Southern Africa and its members comprise of a number of champions that have competed on the PGA Tour, European Tour and the Sunshine Tour.
About the Sunshine Senior Tour
The newly branded Sunshine Senior Tour, has resulted between a partnership with the SA Senior Tour and the Sunshine Tour, under a license agreement for professional members aged 50 and older in South Africa. The tour structure aims to provide a competitive tournament schedule to accommodate the membership and grow senior professional golf in SA.
In 2017, a partnership was formed with the Endangered Wildlife Trust in which a percentage of the total prize fund is donated to support a specific endangered animal in the region a tournament is held.
