The President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, on Wednesday the 23rd March 2020, pronounced a 21-Day National Lockdown as a measure to deal with the effects of the Coronavirus, Covid -19. In his speech, the President did indicate that, despite the lockdown, citizens are still expected to receive an acceptable level of service delivery from Local authorities.

In response to this, the Bitou Municipality commits to provide an acceptable level of basic services to the residents of Bitou. Although, a number of Bitou Employees will be affected by the lockdown, we will make sure that all essential staff is available to service our residents. Service Delivery will still take place in the following areas;

  1. Water and Sanitation
  2. Fleet for Refuse Removal
  3. Electricity
  4. Fire Services
  5. Traffic service and
  6. Disaster Management

The Bitou Council will also have its Customer Care Services on duty and residents can reach them on (+27) 44 5013174/5 or on email; CustomerCare@plett.gov.za to log queries. We make a plea to residents that may experience challenges with these services to engage with the relevant departments to resolve these before the commencement of the National Lockdown.

Bitou Municipality have established a Coordinating Structure to coordinate our efforts to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. The structure;

  1. Coordinates the efforts from the Public and Private Sector under one umbrella. It is made up of Government Departments, District and Local Municipality, Department of Health, Private Doctors, Business, Public Transportation, Law Enforcement Structures, Bitou Tourism and etc;
  2. Pleads to members of the community not to go to medical facilities to be tested when they do not feel well but to call the National Hotline on 080029 999 or the Provincial Hotline on 021 928 4102.
  3. It also urges residents to maintain Social Distancing which entails;
  • Stay at home ( the lockdown will largely enforce this),
  • Avoid contact and keep a distance of 1.5 meters between each other;
  • No protest marches will be approved during this period
  1. Plead with the community to regularly wash hands with water and soap or hand sanitizer;
  2. Supports the closure of our beaches and other public amenities such as libraries, sports fields and community halls;
  3. Appeal to residents to include in their diets,  food that boost the immune system because it assist in fighting the virus

We urge all the residents to stay calm and cooperate with all the regulations that are laid down by the authorities.
