Fire Update 2

Fire in valleys between New Horizons and Green Valley

Fire - Update 28 December 2016, and way forward:

The Fire line is contained and a 72hour monitor and patrol has been in effect. Currently there are a few spots within burnt out area smouldering lightly. This will be monitored for the next 48 Hours. Yesterday the Fire crew and ground team of WoF worked to secure the fire line and complete operational objectives established.

Law Enforcement, security and SAPS will include on current area of their patrols an eye on any activity, as well as omnipresence to hopefully keep children from playing with fire in area.  Damp down and mop ups continue with the patrol and monitoring.

Communities are urged to act as eyes and ears for public safety as well as for oneself, and report any suspected arson activity to SAPS as well as Bitou Public Safety. Landowners are also urged to ensure access, fire breaks and basic firefighting equipment is in place. Please contact the Fire Prevention and Safety Section for additional information regarding rural fire safety 044 501 3230 0/H.

For emergencies please call 044 533 5000

The costs for resources are considered hefty, however the incident could have easily escalated and resulted in loss of numerous homes through area surrounding to potentially Ebenezer, New Horizons, Pine Trees and Qolweni/Bosiesgif, and fire spreading and developing to Green Valley Community. It could have easily been in the Millions of Rands in loss and damage, not to mention potential life loss.

Fortunately, the resources were available and the costs are seen as a small percentage of what could have developed into a disaster.
