Bitou and Department of Social Development recently hosted the Golden Games for Elderly event.
In the key note address by the Executive Mayor of Bitou, he welcomed all young participants of the day and thanked them for being so strong-willed and for making these games possible. These games are made possible by you – for you, we as the municipality and department of social development are only facilitating the event. It is your hard work which you put into your training which will be showcased today. The Mayor also made mention of the last Golden games he attended: “We took it upon ourselves, me and the Deputy Mayor: Adam van Rhyner to open the day with a duo 100m race. I thought to myself, as I weigh much less than the deputy, this race would be a walk in the park. To my despair, the deputy mayor outpaced me on that day.
This active and healthy event took place on the Wednesday 21st May 2014 at the Kranshoek Multi-Purpose Centre. This has been an initiative and a concept which has been annual and it was created by the department of social development in partnership and assistance with Bitou Local Municipality.
The Sport programme for the elderlywas established to create a mutual relationship between all Pensioners clubs around the Bitoujurisdiction. The following pensioners clubs formed part of the Golden Day celebrations; Protea Pensioners Club from Kranshoek, New Horizon Pensioners club and Son Op Pensioners club from the Crags.
The aim of this event was to gather one group from Bitou in order for them to compete against other pensioners clubs around Eden District on the regional Golden Games that will be held in George later this year. Furthermore, they will be competing against other towns within the Eden District for a place to ultimately represent Eden in the Provincial Golden Games which will also take place later this year in Cape Town.
The Department of Social Development’s official Mrs. L Nqolo said to the pensioners clubs” I want you all to enjoy yourselves today and use this platform which has been given to you to engage and take it as a way of living – a healthy life style” the department of social development scheduled the 21st of May as a day to create and ensure that these old pensioners will have a jovial event.Last published 30 March 2016
