On the 27 October 2011 Bitou Executive Mayor Memory Booysen attended a Merit Awards program at Plett Secondary School in New Horizons where he handed out the Merit Awards to well performing students.
This programme was adopted by Bitou Local Municipality at an Ordinary meeting of Council held on 29 September 2010.
This policy applies to all public local schools within Bitou municipality area. It was the wish of the council of Bitou Municipality to initiate greater Municipal involvement in the Education process at the Local High Schools in order to stimulate positive attitudes to education.
The Bitou Municipality then make available awards that are presented to learners who have achieved outstanding academic, sports and other extra-curricular performance each quarter at the three local public schools.
The awards also apply in respect of progress with regard to improvement in various learning areas by learners.
The primary objective of this initiative was to acknowledge top achievers as to motivate others to increase the level of education performance within the Bitou local public high Schools also to nurture tomorrow’s leaders and to bring together cultural diversity.
It was recently suggested that South Cape College together with the Primary Schools be included in the program.
