Ban on Fireworks and Sky Lanterns

Notice 366/2022

The Bitou Municipality urges residents and visitors to please adhere to the prohibition of fireworks & sky lanterns being set off in the area, in the interest of public safety, and various Acts which govern public safety and fire prevention.

The risk and hazards associated with such celebrations pose the likelihood to cause injury and damage to property.

Any applications to display or set off fireworks must be directed to PLETT TOURISM, who will circulate the application to relevant departments before being submitted to the Municipal Manager for consideration and approval.

All Applications must reach the Manager of Plett Tourism by no later than Friday 02 December 2022, 12h00. Consideration of firework displays will only be considered for New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day.

Plett Tourism enquiry contact - 044 501 3150

Bitou Public Safety enquiry contact - 044 501 3240

Due to changes in rainfall within the area, together with the dry and windy conditions normally experienced, it is deemed favourable for the spread and development of run-away fires.

It is in the interest of public safety that fireworks and lanterns be prohibited. Only on approved application and clearance from relevant departments will it be permitted in accordance with special conditions to the time and location of approval granted.

The Emergency Services and Public Safety Sections can focus on the priorities of motor vehicle incidents/accidents, medical emergencies experienced and structural fires rather than thin out resources to cover negligent fires caused by fireworks and/or sky lanterns.

Thank you for your cooperation – Have a Safe and Blessed season in Bitou

Mr Mbulelo Memani
MUNICIPAL MANAGER
Bitou Local Municipality
