RECONCILIATION DAY / STREET LIGHTS FESTIVAL

Speech by the Executive Mayor, Memory Booysen

Everything has been said about Madiba for the past 10 days, what I do know is that nobody is getting tired of hearing about this icon. We are a very fortunate generation because we lived this historic day, others to follow will only be reading about this event and the legacy of tata Madiba.

Events of this magnitude only happen once in a lifetime and an extraordinary leader like Nelson Mandela also make their appearances on the world stage once in a lifetime. We must all strive to follow in his footsteps; he saw no race; he dealt with people, equally.

As of today we must no longer refer to ourselves as whites, coloureds and blacks but as South Africans, and our visitors from other countries are our friends. When we switch on these Christmas lights, let the glow symbolize the spirit of Madiba.

Thank you,
Memory Booysen
