Samkelo Mvimbi together with Athenkosi Dlala, both born in Plettenberg Bay, will be representing South Africa at the Tokyo Olympic Games that are scheduled to kick off on the 23rd July 2021. Samkelo will be representing the country in the Senior Men’s Hockey tournament whilst Athenkosi will take part in the Under 23 Soccer event.
This is a short feature on Samkelo Mvimbi:
Samkelo Mvimbi, who is commonly known as Sam, was born in Plettenberg Bay and attended Phakamisani Primary as well as Greenwood Primary. He later went to Oakhill High School.
His passion for sports was evident from a very young age and he excelled in hockey, cricket, and rugby and was a very talented soccer player at Barca Football Club in Kwanokuthula.
It was whilst he was at Oakhill High School where his talent in hockey and cricket really shown and he represented the school in a number of tournaments in both these sports codes. He was first received his national colours for the SA Under 16 hockey squad. He was later also selected for the SA Under 18 team that played a series against their Australian counterparts.
Sam later went on to further his studies at the Pretoria University where he continued to excel in hockey and represented the institution at various tournaments. He also was selected for the SA Under 21 as well as the Senior National Men’s hockey teams.
The entire Plettenberg Bay community is very proud of Sam’s achievements and will be cheering him on during the Olympic Games. Each game that he will be playing he is assured that Plett and Knysna will be fully behind him.
