School visit by Executive Mayor and COVID-19 Task Team

Issued on the 11 June 2020

The Bitou Executive Mayor, Councillor Peter Lobese, led a delegation that included the members of the Bitou Covid -2019 Task Team to some of the schools in the Bitou Community. These visits took place on the morning of the 10th June 2020.  This is in response to the national reopening of schools on 8 June 2020 as part of the Level 3 Lockdown regulations.

The visits to these schools was primarily aimed at assessing if the schools are,  indeed , compliant to the protocols that are laid down to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, Covd -2019. In doing the assessment, it was also to familiarize the Bitou Council and the Covid -2019 Task Team about some of the challenges that the schools might face in relations to the Covid -2019.

The Principals and management from all the schools welcomed the Executive Mayor and the Task Team members with open arms. All the schools have illustrated that they are indeed compliant with the hygiene and safety protocols aimed at curbing the impact of the virus.

The Executive Mayor, Councillor Peter Lobese, expressed his satisfaction at the fact that our schools have demonstrated that they are compliant and well set up to deal with the pandemic. Currently, the learners from grades 7 and 12 are trying hard to obey the protocols set to prevent the spread. However, it may need more effort to ensure that learners obey the rules when more grades return to school that will be undertaken by the Education Department through the “Phase Return to School” approach.

The Executive Mayor and the Task Team vowed to continue work with the Education Department and the schools to   ensure that our schools complies with the prevention of the spread of the virus in our schools. The next visits to the schools will be soon. The Executive Mayor, Councillors and the Task Team hope to hand over packs that include sanitizers and PPPE, to all the schools in Bitou.
