Unblocking of Electricity Meters

20 December 2018

MEDIA RELEASE:

20 December 2018

The Bitou Local Municipality Council at its meeting held on the 02 November 2018 –C/2/114/11/18 resolved that, “the punitive measure on non-payment of services be conducted in a humane manner and cutting off of services not be to be conducted immediately prior to weekends and public holidays and that the new electricity meters installed should be registered without undue delay”

In responding to the above resolution:-

The Municipality, mindful of its legal and constitutional mandate has decided to grant leniency to the under privileged communities by unblocking the electricity meters of the defaulting consumers from those communities as a gesture to ensure that they have access to the basic services of electricity from the 20th  December 2018 until 04 January 2019.

This decision forms part of an annual consideration and practice of many years by successive councils to alleviate the plight of poverty amongst the under privileged communities.

However, it should be noted that this decision does not take away the responsibility of the consumers to meet their full obligation toward the Municipality for services rendered.  Consumers will still need to make necessary arrangements, as permitted by the applicable policy, to address any arrears due to the Municipality

We wish all our consumers and their families as well as all our visitors a peaceful and joyous festive season!
