The need to upgrade Kranshoek library derived from increased community needs and lack of space and equipment.

A business plan was submitted to the Provincial Library Services and Bitou Municipality.  The 2014/15 budget was approved for the upgrade process. After all formal SCM processes, the tender/contract was awarded to New Morning Construction who went on site 13 May 2014.

Mr Omar Essa assigned Mr Ferlain to assist the Manager Libraries for completion of this project.

Other alterations done to at the library in order to improve the existing building and the surroundings included:

• Supply and install kitchen cupboards
• Counters for PC’s to provide more computers for public access to support education in the community
• Painting of the existing building damaged over the years by heavy weather and vandalism
• Fixing of gutters and waterproofing on existing roof
• Paving around the building for proper access to the facility
• External lights to help the security protect the property against vandalism and crime
• Internal lights are not uniform and was replaced with energy saving lights

The project completion is due for 8 September 2015 and the library will open with the capacity of 222 square meters from 157square metres.

The extension included a new adult section, teenage corner and an extended ICT area.

The library will open 1 September to the community of Kranshoek.
