Bitou Municipality is proud to announce the successful handover of houses to residents, including disabled individuals, as part of the Ebenezer Housing Project. This initiative represents a significant milestone in Bitou's commitment to providing affordable housing opportunities and fostering inclusivity within our community.

A total of 13 houses were handed over to residents, with four allocated specifically to disabled individuals. These homes symbolize Bitou’s dedication to ensuring that all members of our community have access to safe and suitable housing, regardless of their abilities or circumstances.

In January, Bitou handed over houses to 8 families from New Horizons- this is after 10 families moved in November last year.

The Ebenezer Housing Project is one of Bitou's legacy projects, aiming to deliver 1600 mixed housing opportunities. In addition to providing much-needed housing solutions, this project will also generate employment opportunities and subcontracting opportunities, further contributing to the socio-economic development of our municipality.

Speaking at the handover, Bitou’s Mayor Councillor Claude Terblanche, said today was extra special as his mother, who is also disabled, was a housing recipient.

“Today is special as my mother has been a deserving recipient and on the list for years.”

“This project has been a long time coming and I am happy to see that its bearing fruit in our lifetime and while I am the Executive Mayor,” Cllr Terblanche added.

Meanwhile, Bitou’s Deputy Executive Mayor, Councillor Nokuzola Kolwapi, said seeing the elderly being beneficiaries was proof that there was a backlog.

“There was no attention being given to those residents and now they can finally feel the freedom that was fought for a long time ago.

Meanwhile, Councillor Thembela Mhlana gave the new recipients well wishes to enjoy their properties.

73-year-old Catherine Maxim, who is the mother of Councillor Terblanche, could not hold back her tears as she entered her house.

She said: “I am overjoyed about this day.”

Bitou Municipality remains committed to advancing initiatives that promote social inclusion, economic empowerment, and sustainable development. We are grateful for the partnership and support of all stakeholders involved in the Ebenezer Housing Project, including government agencies, community organizations, and residents.

As we celebrate this significant achievement, we look forward to continuing our efforts to create thriving, inclusive communities where all residents can live with dignity and opportunity.
