This year’s Freedom Day was a hive of activity for Bitou’s Executive Mayor.
Councillor Claude Terblanche handed over the Fiske Saal building to the New Horizons Pensioners Club.
The new building will allow for residents aged 55 and above to have a space to socialise, hold meetings and have their anti-aging activities.
Previously the group of pensioners, who are grant dependent, used a sports field which was not wheelchair friendly.
The new building will allow them to apply for more grants as they have more space for more elderly to join.
At the event Mayor Terblanche said: “ Today is one of the most historic days to celebrate in the history of South Africa. Today we celebrate the battles fought by our forefathers and mothers, grand parents, mothers and fathers. Today we are reaping the fruit of the hardships and struggles of those who fought against the segregrational system that was imposed on them.
"I have quite a special and busy schedule for the day. I am starting my day off to hand over the historical 'Fiske saal' as we know it. To the New Horizon Pensioners Club.
"Today I Councillor Claude Neilton Terblanch, the Excutive Mayor of Plettenberg Bay declare this community hall a valuable service to the community of New Horizon. I declare that this building will be in the control of the people of New Horizon!
"Vandag is dit vir my voorreg om hier te staan en die een te wees wie die sleutel oorhandig. Vir die wat my ken sal weet een dat een van my hoof beginsels is om die ouer mense te respekteer en te waardeur. Ek wil vandag vir die pension club se ek waardeur julle en ek hoop die nuwe plekkie bring Baie vreugde en gemaklikheid."
In the afternoon Councillor Terblanche attended the Local Car Stance in New Horizons.
This is one of Bitou's newest events.
This time Bitou Municipality supported the event with Law Enforcement, ablution facilities and much more.
On the event Councillor Terblanche said: "We should allow our youngsters to express themselves. The car stance is an expressive movement for our youngsters and I am proud as a Mayor to be part of promoting such platforms.
"Freedom of expression for all should always be promoted," he added.
