On 20 August 2025 members of the Bitou Council and senior officials joined the Plett Shark Spotters team for a hands-on engagement aimed at strengthening the partnership that began nearly three years ago. The initiative, which has significantly enhanced beach safety and boosted local tourism, continues to deliver tangible benefits for Plettenberg Bay.
Executive Mayor Jessica Kamkam led the delegation, accompanied by Councillors Claude Terblanche, Renicia Willemse, Dave Swart, Samkele Aluncedo-Lamla Mangxaba, and Annelise Olivier. Acting Municipal Manager Victor Felton also made time to engage directly with the Spotters and observe their operations.
The Shark Spotters team shared insights into the programme’s impact, including the creation of 14 jobs for young people recruited from various wards across Bitou. These youth have undergone rigorous training in marine conservation, equipping them with valuable skills and positioning them as environmental ambassadors for the town.
In addition to safety and employment, the programme runs a dynamic educational campaign that promotes marine awareness and ocean-smart behavior among residents—especially children. Councillors were taken on a boat trip to view key deployment sites and learn about the marine research tools used by the Spotters.
Mayor Kamkam expressed her admiration for the team’s work, stating:
“The Shark Spotters programme is more than a safety initiative—it’s a beacon of innovation, youth empowerment, and environmental stewardship. What these young people are doing for Plettenberg Bay is extraordinary, and Council is proud to stand behind a project that protects lives, builds careers, and deepens our connection to the ocean.”
Bitou Municipality remains committed to supporting initiatives that align with its values of safety, sustainability, and inclusive development.
